Training weavers to create designs using ICT

The ICT resource centre will have an appropriate textile designing software such as CHIC and CARPET – CAD, provided by Media Labs Asia, which will be customized according to the requirements of the weavers. This software will facilitate easy reproduction of traditional designs and aid immensely in their preservation. It will also provide assistance in combining the myriad existing designs, thereby enriching the creativity of the weavers.

The weavers therefore will themselves become designers and work in conjunction with market realities. The possibility of creating a rich library of designs will also be harnessed, organizing and categorizing the designs in order to make them easily accessible.

Through the use of high – end designing facilities, initiative endeavours to train 1000 weavers to create a minimum of 100 design patterns at weaving level.

Training weavers in apparel design

Training will be imparted to the weavers, especially the women, in the basics of textile and apparel design. They will be active participants in this revolution; they will be the facilitators in the process of value addition, that is stitching and apparel design, which is presently being done by outside agencies.

This initiative endeavours to train the weavers to create a minimum of 100 design patterns for apparels. A core group of 5 weavers will be trained as master designers to guide the rest of their team.

The value addition will therefore take place by the weavers themselves, enabling the production of finished products in the form of apparels and other utility items instead of raw material. The weavers’ will finally be able to reap the profits of their toil, which were earlier appropriated by garment manufactories and other middle level agencies.

Training in Vocational ICT Skills

The ICT resource centre will also provide vocational training for the youth of in order to equip them for alternative options of livelihood through the skill builder program, which is devised by IL & FS Education and Technology Services Limited (IETS), an institution promoted by Infrastructure Leasing and Finance Services Limited. IETS is committed to enhancing the quality and delivery of education.

The main objective of skill builder is to acquaint the rural youth with the benefits of ICT and their application in various spheres of life.

In the Skill Builder Program, computer applications are taught through examples which are relevant to the learners’ environment. The different parts of a computer and basic computer applications including Microsoft office are taught. A brief introduction to the internet also forms a part of the syllabus.

Training in Basic English language

The ICT resource centre endeavours to impart training in Basic English language skills through the English Relay Program (ERP).

The English Relay Program is devised by IL & FS Education and Technology Services Limited (IETS), an institution promoted by Infrastructure Leasing and Finance Services Limited. IETS is committed to enhancing the quality and delivery of education. Being both comprehensive and interactive, the English Relay Program (ERP) is specially designed to cater to the rural masses.

Its core contents include basic grammar, vocabulary building, creative writing and communication skills. Both spoken and written English are given equal emphasis.

Creation of an Exclusive Outlet

The major source of revenue for the Chanderi Weavers’ ICT Resource Center (CWICTRC) would be generated through the sale of its products, which would be displayed in the in house store, which would function as an exclusive outlet. Products for sale will include both apparels (saris, suits, scarves and stoles) and utility items (cushion covers, table covers and curtains).

This exclusive outlet will also function as a weavers’ micro – tourism centre. A part of it will be reserved for tourists to observe the process of weaving right from the first step to the last step.
